A Working Weekend!

Finally! It's 50 degrees here today, sun is shining, and tonight looks as though it may be the last night for the low to go below 32 degrees. So I won't be posting til early next week, I'm working in the garden, yay! So far today, brush and perennials cut back, burn barrel going, BBQ got cleaned, and peas are soaking! Tonight we'll brew some Ale around the campfire, BBQ, and tomorrow we plant peas and set up the potato cages. Hope you all are having productive weekends too!

Again? .... and a proud moment for our city!

I heard the wind howling all night and fell asleep to sleet, but then woke up to snow, yet again! I posted on my Facebook page yesterday that I was sick of the cold winter we were having and my brother replied "You should move back to Minnesota where the winters are milder".... I got a good laugh from that one!

The good news? Even though it was coming down fast and thick at 6:00 am, there was no call from the school and no closing on the news! It appears the City of Virginia Beach has accepted their fate in the climate change and are just going to roll with it now... I am very, very proud of them!

More good news - the forecast for next week shows temps in the 60's... you know where I'll be this weekend - in bed! The outside beds, that is! Now I'm off to rearrange and repot seedlings, hope to update on that finally later today.

Here we go again... another Nor'easter expected in this afternoon to dump copious amounts of rain and snow on our area! I know there are alot of you dealing with the same weather system headed my way, I hope your garden braves the storm well. I will be busy this afternoon tying down the entire yard with 550 cord so we don't blow away, so in lieu of a seedling update, I leave you with this inspirational photo from last Spring:

Seedlings spending their days hardening off!

Don't worry, the weather will stop this relentless assault on us and we will see this soon I hope! Time to batten down the hatches yet again...

I KILLED CABLE!

We had a birthday over the weekend - Lochlann turned "7"! And of course, with that came another one of my (in)famous cakes, lol! Yep, I am horrible at cake decorating and so I gave up after his 1st birthday and now anything that sprinkles stitck to qualifies as birthday cake in my house. Mom, you'll like this one: I even wiped the candles off to save for the next birthday!

A huge event transpired last Thursday afternoon: I KILLED CABLE TV!!! Some of you may remember me debating this last year, but I finally did it! I did it while the kids were at school and hubby was at work, so I figured I would get the blank stares when they all came home, but I was pleasantly surprised. Finnegan simply shrugged, walked into his room and got his video game out. When Loch got home an hour later he said "What happened to Sponge Bob?", and I told him that Sponge Bob was banned from TV because the government thought it was a horrible show. Whatever, it worked!

Finn not watching TV, although this is just as bad...

A video of my TV minus the cable box!

I was prepared to do battle with Cox Cable over the phone, but they were very pleasant. The fact that I increased my internet speed from them at the same time may have had something to do with it. I first started thinking seriously about this again 2 weeks ago when I checked out the prices and promos on satellite TV. I realized though, that I don't have to cancel cable and hook up satellite on the same day! So we are going to live this way for awhile and see how it goes. The past 5 days has been a breeze, though. The only thing I liked about the cable was the DVR, but so far I don't miss that, either. We have just been watching shows on HULU or on the network websites from the laptop. I've had Apple TV for a few years so maybe we will hack that so we can transmit HULU or similar right to the TV. In the meantime, we have about 17 channels, some are home shopping though. We do have all the major local networks in HD, along with several PBS channels from VA and NC, and there is still a PBS Kids channel for appropriate cartoons - all this comes just from an over-the-air HD antenna bought cheaply a few years ago. I found it amusing also that I found several websites and blogs that are devoted to cancelling cable and helping people "kick the addiction" LOL.

So that's one more check on the list of trying to live within our means and at the same time we are finding more time for hobbies and reading and not so concerned about the time on the clock that was always blinking at us, lol! Whatever will I do without Celebrity Rehab and The Bachelor? I'm KIDDING!

Back to the seedlings this afternoon, more to come on that tomorrow.

Fun With Catalogs

It's been a productive past two days. I finally got my first set of seedlings repotted and off to another set of lights. I think my first flat sowed was overall a huge disappointent, as much of it was old herb seeds that I think had passed their prime. Now I know and they are trash. The rest are slowly coming around, but ugh! - herb seeds are a pain, as many of them take 20-30 days to sprout. Just yesterday, my first parsley sprouted! I was finally able to move on to sowing the tomatoes, peppers, and some flowers on Monday, and they are much quicker and I am excited for them to show their faces in the next week or so. My zinnias sprouted in under 2 days, so I think I will just direct seed the rest when it warms up. It's my first time starting flowers from seed, so many I am doing indoors just for learning and watching purposes. Even though I am doing flowers, I will admit they are not just for looks, all my varieties are specifically for bees and other beneficials, with the exception of the Job's Tears which just look plain fun!

So here is this weeks new seed flats:
Tomatoes:
Brandywine (H, Baker Creek)
True Black Brandywine (H, Baker Creek)
Unidentified Polish Heirloom (given to me by an old Master Gardener, saved seed since her Grandmother's time, 1-3 lb fruits, very exciting!)
Red Zebra (H, Baker Creek)
Vorlon (H, Baker Creek)
Paul Robeson (H, Fedco)
4th of July (Hybrid, swapped seed)
Orange Wellington (Hybrid, swapped seed)
Yellow Pear (free, Hometown Seeds)

Peppers:
Quadrato d'Asti Rosso Bell (H, Baker Creek)
Sweet Yellow Stuffing (H, Baker Creek)
Jalapeno - Craig's Grange (H, Baker Creek)
Fish Hot Pepper - (Fedco) -anyone seen this? It's cool in a pot, looks like Koi Fish!

Other Novelty Veggies:
Purple of Romagna Artichoke (H, Baker Creek, 2nd sowing, only 2 viable plants last time!)
Aunt Molly's Ground Cherry (from Kenneth of The Indoor Garden(er))
Litchi Tomato (H, Baker Creek)

Greens & Onions:
White Lisbon Bunching Onions (Seeds of Change)
Val d'Orges Lettuce (H, Baker Creek)
Gourmet Mix Greens (free, Hometown Seeds)

Herbs:
Florence Fennel (Ferry Morse, old seed)
Giant of Italy Parsley (H, Baker Creek, old seed!)
Gigante d'Italia Parsley (same variety, Fedco)
Greek Basil (saved seed)
Oregano (old seed, Burpee)
Marjoram (old seed, Burpee)
Sweet Mace/Mexican Mint Marigold (H, Baker Creek)

Flowers:
Carpet of Snow Alyssum (Fedco)
Gypsophilia (seed swap)
Burgundy Gaillardia (Fedco)
Butterfly Flower (store bought ?)
Red Hot Poker (Burpee)
Job's Tears (Fedco)
Bee Balm (Fedco)
Giant Snapdragon (Fedco)
Persian Carpet Zinnia (Fedco)

I am waiting to sow Calendula and Marigold until next week, since it was backordered from Fedco and due in this week. I know the extra info is a bit unnecessary but some of my seeds I sowed them all threw away the packet, now I have a record of the variety and where I got it! You will also notice some of my seeds are from what I refer to as "the WalMart of the seed world", aka Burpee, and while I no longer order there, I am not one to waste seed, either! BTW, my mystery seed never sprouted, so we may never know....

On to the next new thing - has anyone used this yet? I got sucked in the other day at a big box store. I told my 6 year old weeks ago that he should not let me buy seeds or plants at the store, and he grabbed my arm and said "No, Mom!" when I quickly veered away from the light bulbs (our primary mission) and ran into the seed starting area trying to evade him behind a gardening magazine display. Well he found me after I had already grabbed this: "But it's NEW", I exclaimed in true 4 year old fashion, and "I never said I couldn't buy dirt, only plants and seed stuff"! But he's a pretty intelligent little kid and pointed out that there is NO DIRT in seed starting mix, and in fact it was considered "seed stuff". Damn, why do I try and educate him, it's coming back to bite me. Anyway, I played the "I'm the mom, and that makes me the decider" card and came home with what looks to be a wonderful way to store seed starting mix. It's small and compressed, you just add water and it's supposed to puff up into a bucketfull of mix. Can't really tell from the pic, but the package is only about 2 inches thick. I'm still working on a just opened big bag of the stuff, but wondered if anyone else has experienced this and if it works as advertised. If so, I may stock up at end of season it's so easy to store!

And you MUST order this catalog! It's another one that's worth the price of the tree it's printed on LOL! It's chock full of gorgeous tools, incredibly useful items you never knew you needed, and a bunch of awesome stuff that is completely unneccessary but fun nonetheless! Link here for catalog order request. It's really a good thing this catalog didn't come until after my seed starting was underway, or I would be broke.

Here's a sampling of some of the items I found:

This product makes me want to turn my entire property into a spider web maze of bamboo poles!

This hat would is helpful for those times when you feel you could fly... liftoff!

Speaking of flies, how 'bout some flypaper for your ponytail? Oh, yes, if you can dream it, they have it, LOL

BTW, if any of you enjoy working with wood using hand tools, they also make a catolog for woodworking tools that my husband loves ogling at.

With that, I will leave you for the day to go head to the library, and then catch up on some housework, exciting stuff planned today. Wish I was outside planting peas, but it's still too cold...

Of Bathrooms: Indoors & Out!

Hubby got home last night and I got my camera back! Here's the new bath!

My new sink rocks! Makes me want to floss more. My husband laughed when I put up the extendable shaving mirror... I have always wanted one of those, don't really know why, they are just cool...

He also returned with some photos on the camera from his "guys only" weekend:

This is where they left my car... you should have seen it when he pulled back in the driveway last night, it's caked with mud.

The cabin they hiked into, 3 hour hike through the snow to get there from where the car was parked. It's owned by the Appalachian Trail Club, who does maintenance on the primitive shelters and trails in the area. Although this had no heat and an outhouse, this is definitely not one of the primitive ones! It had a fireplace and wood cookstove inside to provide a little heat.

Sailor/Father/Husband

I know there are alot of outhouse art fans out there, this one is photogenic! I may enlarge it and frame it for my new bathroom!

View from the outhouse/privvy

Roaring fire, was 20 degrees in the stone house/cabin!

He was wrecked when he got back last night, lasted long enough to strew backpacking gear and dirty laundry around the house and mess up my bathroom, then fell asleep!

So now it's back to catching up on the garden stuff, namely, my next seed sowing! I have been neglecting that the past week with the remodeling but will dive back into it tomorrow morning.

DONE!

Hubby finished the bathroom by 3 pm right on schedule, he rocks! (All except the molding, but I will let that slide until Monday!) He left to go hike the Appalachian Trail (brrrr!) at 3 pm. They will get up there at about 10 pm and have an hour hike in to their camp for the night. Yah, what a way to relax, huh? Go hiking in February in the snow... gotta admit that if I wasn't at home with the kids I would be there with him, but for now, my pack hangs lonely on the wall (at least I sent him with a flask of Laphroig scotch to keep warm)! But that's okay, I have a new bathroom and I'm putting the kids to bed and grabbing a glass of wine and giving the dogs a pedi-pedi, then giving myself a mani/pedi!

Sorry, no photos... hubby took my camera! You will have to wait to virtually snoop through my new medicine chest :)
