Slacking Off in the Garden...

Peek-a-Boo!

Do you see me now?

Hello!

This is wonderful - I have wanted a bird for a few years now but don't want the 80+ year commitment of their lifespan, so now I don't have to worry about that anymore! I have so many doves and all let me get right next to them while weeding, etc, but this is the first that has decided to nest right outside my back door in a basket. I can see her looking at me as I type! Smart on her part, since she can see when I am going to let the dogs out and she can round up the young'uns!

Yes, I am supposed to be knee deep in garden work right now... I'm so easily distracted!

  1. This is strange . . . we're both at our computers when we should be in the garden! I've been spending the morning cleaning/tidying up the messy house but now have to put on my gardening shoes and get on out there.

What a perfect nesting spot your dove picked! She looks very comfy.

We had three mourning doves in the garden one morning this week and they were pecking around in the raised bed I had just planted out in carrots. I was a little worried they were eating the seeds, but they haven't been back (that I've seen) since.

  2. I just came back in from outside and it's so nasty hot and humid!
I think I'll keep busy inside until it cools off some this evening.

  4. What a beauty! We have had one nesting right outside our back door in AZ, in our Palo Verde tree, and I can get just close enough to take pictures with the zoom lens. We try to not use the back door any more than necessary while she's nesting. I've never seen any in our yard here in WA.

  5. We had those in our old house. There were always two. Always two together.

Now we have other birds who have made nests by our front door and when we try to use it the birds fly round and round, shreak at us and I honestly think one will fly inside the house one day.

  6. Mama Pea,I have never seen my doves eating seeds from my garden, but then I have a nasty mockingbird that perches on the fence there and protects my beds!

Dani, that humidity and heat will be here soon too!

Fiona, I would love to see your northern doves sometime!

Gran & Ribbit, we won't go there about my birds out the front door - they are swallows, need I say more? The back door is much more pleasant! Although I am turning into crazy lady sitting here at my computer with the back storm door window open making dove noises at her :)

  7. p.s. she picked a great spot, that's my herb basket! She's got oregano, marjoram, some lamb's ear and some pretty little blanket flowers in there! Good thing I have another herb basket, but I better move it before another settles in!

  8. Those are great pictures! My parents have a dove that nested in the hanging basket right outside their front door. She even stays in her nest while my father waters the flowers.
