We are blessed with an abundance of bees in our yard, every year I look forward first to the Mason bees, then the bumbles with a sprinkling of honeybees. Luckily this year we have more honeybees than we've ever had, I only hope that continues. We also have "Monster Bees", as seen below on the sunflower. Yes, they are as big as they look LOL, about half the size of my thumb, hence the kids' name for them. I think it helps that we don't have to "share", we are the only ones anywhere nearby that actually landscape or garden at all, and every perennial I plant is specifically for them.
Enjoy!

I apologize for the jet noise in the video, but it's like this 24/7 since we live across the street from the Naval Air Station, and this is actually quiet considering the usual screaming SuperHornets banking over the house. I rarely notice it unless I'm on the phone anymore :) It's hard to get too spun up about it since that's where our paycheck comes from.
Bees working hard, every plant in my yard seems to have dozens!
My weekend is a bust - hubby works Fri, Sat, Sun & Mon! Last night he got out of the squadron at 3 am and then he had to leave again at 11:30 a.m.... pretty ridiculous! Due to his work schedule and the near 100 degree temps I'm spending the holiday weekend indoors reorganizing my kitchen, creating space again where there was none - fun times, I know. I'll post on that soon! Hope you all are having a better weekend!
Well, reorganization is good for the soul.
ReplyDeleteThose are HUGE bees. Wowie. I love to see them rolling around in squash blossoms.
Wow you do have a lot of bees. I used to hand pollinate some of my plants to make sure they got pollinated because we don't have many bees.
ReplyDeleteWe have a background noise from a smelter and I've never gotten used to it. The husband and kids have gown up with it and don't notice it but I still notice it when I sit in the yard. I'm yearning for a quiet place with no traffic or smelter noise.
What fabulous photos!! I was sad today- out taking photos of my flowers- and seeing very few bees. I'm hoping that it was just that it was threatening rain. But, I'm planning to get a hive next year. Then things will be buzzing.

I always look so forward to you being stuck in the house-it means another great reorganizing project in the works and I love that.
ReplyDeleteSorry hubby works. But Sue reaps the benefits. Ha!
Dont feel bad, my Husband works all weekend too. But truthfully, there is no such thing as a Holiday on a farm anyway. I hope you enjoy your weekend of reorganizing.
ReplyDeleteTO BAD YOU CAN'T SPEND THE WEEK-END WITH HUBBY---I LIKE YOUR SUNFLOWER SHOTS,THEY WOULD MAKE GREAT CALENDER OR POST CARD MATERIAL.MY HUSBAND WAS STATIONED AT EL TORO A LONG TIME AGO.IT IS A AIR FIELD IN CAL.HE SLEPT NEXT TO THOSE BOMBERS COMING IN FOR OVER A YEAR,STILL CAN'T HEAR VERY WELL.HAVE A HAPPY 4TH WITH THE BOYS AND TRY TO STAY COOL,ONLY ANOTHER MONTH OF THIS HEAT [ OR IS IT LONGER DOWN THAT AWAY ]
ReplyDeleteI hope all of you can see an increase in the amount of bees you have, it's very sad to hear of so many of you noticing their absence. On a selfish level, I can't imagine going out there to hand pollinate in this heat, we definitely need those bees!
ReplyDeleteI was working in the garden this morning and the bees were buzzing about all around me. It was so awesome.
ReplyDeletejust a heads up.... those "huge" bees are carpenter bumblebees.....they love to make holes/nests in anything wood. They can be very agressive. The only wood that is safe from their destructiveness is pressure treated wood. I have these buggers "living" in the rafters of my garden shed.
