so you think YOUR yard looks bad???

Take a look at what I'm having to look at all day...

This is NOT my yard! It is the house directly next door, and it's been like this for 2 weeks!

They piled their crap on my sideyard - and oh, look! - the neighborhood redneck children made a fort out of mattresses and shingled it, too!

Let me reiterate: this is NOT my yard!
For those of you who saw this on facebook last week, it's STILL THERE!

I've called the city, nothing has been done yet, so now I'm thinking I'm going to have to get hubby's trailer out of the yard and haul their crap away myself. They have moved out so there is nobody there. I'm starting to wish we would have just gone in to debt up to our eyeballs and sprung for the wooden privacy fence around the yard instead of replacing the old fence with wire, ugh!

But anyway... today is a lovely day and I'm spending it weeding the fence line on the right side (junky neighbor's side) of the fence. It would never have gotten this bad except they don't mow and it all came through the wire fence. Check out the below photo and see how you can't even see my mulched fenceline bed? It's only taken me a half hour to do the first section in the pic, and thank goodness the stuff is rooted over on the other side of the fence so clearing it on my side is relatively easy, if not long and boring with a horrible view of junk all afternoon! I feel bad for letting it get this way on my side, but one person can only keep so much land pristine, and my priority has been the vegetable garden until now. I may break out the big guns and go next door and spray round-up along their fence. I'm taking a short break to get the "snakey-feeling" off of me and then it's back out for round 2. Every time I reach my hand into those weeds I get creeped out!

So today you should give thanks.... that you don't have my neighbors!

One bonus, a light harvest which enabled me to get an early start on my work outside!

  1. That fort is hysterical! To me - maybe not so much to you. STOP weeding by hand. You will be doing everyone a favor by getting over there with your Round Up! And put a picture of all the crap on Craig's List. Someone may haul it away for you!

  3. Hang in there, girl. Someday soon (not soon enough, I know) you'll be living in the northwoods with only trees on each side of you and you'll have to get in the car to go next door to borrow a cup of . . . cheese for your hotdish! ;o)

  4. Melissa, the fort ceased to be funny on the 3rd day! Not weeding it isn't an option, since I'm having a big BBQ in a couple of weeks and there's no way I can have people over with it looking like that! I will do roundup on their side, but that doesn't help what's already there LOL

Hi Janet! Sweet isn't the word I would choose for our neighborhood kids, they are more like hoodlums! I caught one trying to kill a bird in my front yard a few months ago, he's lucky he escaped with his own life intact! Tomorrow is city pickup day so I'm hoping the city forwarded my complaint on for them to handle, time will tell!

Mama Pea - stop teasing me! I can't get away from my neighborhood fast enough - sure wish the housing market would take off again for selling, but that's a double edged sword on the buying side, isn't it LOL?

  5. Wow! How long before the street police will take care of that? Where is the owner???

You could do it yourself or...light it.

  6. Oh my goodness... I laughed about the the mattress fort, but it is such an eyesore. I'm sorry you have such rude neighbors. Hopefully the town will haul it away on garbage day.

  7. Hmm...it looks like somebody could use a homemade catapult. Oh yeah, just launch the stuff in other people's yards..heh.

  8. I feel your pain. You should see what I have to look at every day out my kitchen window. My redneck neighbours use their yard as a dumping ground for all sorts of junk and then they try to pretty it up by planting a few flowers and making an hideous fence from pallet wood!
Not to mention their clothes line is two feet from my kitchen window which means I get to look at their drying laundry and underwear!

  9. I'm not sure the police would even do anything about it - most likely myself and the business owner across the street will get rid of it - we are the only ones who seem to care on this street! Our area is a little "odd" in that we aren't really a neighborhood, just a lone street near the airfield, so we don't have much police presence (a good thing) and real city code patrols here unless requested (which i did). Even though this is an issue occasionally, I wouldn't trade it for a Homeowner's Assoc for anything in the world! At least I don't have the city harassing me about my clothesline or veggie garden!

Hi Sparkless! so you know what I'm talking about! I have a clothesline but it's a nice retractable one and I wouldn't hang undies out that's for sure LOL! I will admit that since moving to the Bible Belt years ago I have developed an appreciation for redneck-ness, but I draw the line at mattresses and outright trash in my yard!

  10. Oh, yes. Tall privacy fences make better neighbors. I'm so happy I don't have to look at my neighbor's "garden". You know, those weeds he waters every day.

  11. LOL! I'm sorry, Erin. I don't mean to laugh but sometimes you just gotta say, "To hell with it" and pick up other people's sh*t. I get so mad when I have to pick litter off of our front lawn. Do you know if they were renters or owners who had lost their home to foreclosure? It's just sad when people don't have enough pride to clean up after themselves.

Shingled mattress??? I would never let my child play anywhere near someone's crusty old mattress. Bed bugs anyone?

  12. Thomas, this is my full time single-dad to 2 toddlers neighbor, he's a renter and I think he was forced out by the landlord. I had to yell at so many kids last week playing in that junk I had to wonder where ARE their parents? Eeeew! Needless to say after the city picked up all the big junk yesterday I treated myself to my favorite java shop drink and headed back home to spend the day sweeping up their debris and mowing their front lawn - I stopped short of starting to plant stuff over there LOL
