The weeds have taken over...

Before we get to the weeds, check out this forecast!  Crazy weather for sure.

Got the lights and heat mat hooked up, making do with these 4 foot lights is pretty ridiculous looking, but after a trip to the local big box stores, (all of 'em), I am realizing that 24" shop lights are a myth.  I have one from a long time ago but it's a "grow light" and I've been doing this too long to fall for that one again!

Okay, here's the weeds - prepare yourself, it's bad out there!

Sorry, the video is sideways :)

I had a constant companion in a robin that stayed near me the whole time, sifting through the dirt clods I was flinging to the side!

Here's the before & after shots...

Before

After

Too bad this is only about 1% of the work that needs to be done out there.  The skies are already dark now and we have severe thunderstorm warnings and a tornado watch in effect already, looks like my fun is over out there for the day.

    2. Me too! We have tons of the stuff but I will say that the chickens love it and the pigs munch on it a little too.

    1. Sue, isn't that crazy? It was downright hot and humid today, but with the cold front blowing in right now it's like an August storm!

  3. I've got the 4 foot shop lights as well but I think my rack is a bit wider than yours. I'm excited to finally have seeds planted and on the heat mat. Woo Hoo!!
But look at those temps you're having. Yowza! It's like summer! But we're still having snow flurries. Yeah..

    1. Judy, you NEED that snow! Yep, my rack is only 24" wide since I need to find a place for it year round and there's not many places 4 ft wide in a 950 sq ft house LOL

  4. I have no doubt at all, my dear, that you will have the whole backyard/garden area whipped into shape PDQ! Wouldn't it be funny if you got about a foot of snow NOW after your way too warm winter? (Ooops, maybe that wasn't a very nice thing to say.)

We've had snow coming down all day long but it's not accumulating at all. The temp is hovering in the low thirties which probably accounts for the melting. Gotta say the big, fat flakes have been pretty to watch though. And it is moisture for the soil!

    1. Mama Pea, my back is soooooo sore this morning! That opening day of weeding is like skiing for the first time of the year, there doesn't seem to be any way of preparing for the pain! I was hoping your snow would stick, but at least you got to watch big flakes fall and get into the quilt studio. I think next winter will be better, at least I hope so! Funny how us northerners LIKE winter at the appropriate time of the year! I told my mom on the phone the other day when she was saying there was no snow "Well that's disturbing, otherwise what's the point of living in Minnesota?" LOL...

  5. Really weird weather. Now hop up to MN and do mine,OK,I guess that would be impossible because you'd have to start with the ground up.Dig up the earth, till the soil ect. Ya I know ,get one of those lazy brats I have here playing x-box to get out there and do it,alas ,if I had your smarts when I was young ,I would have taught them to do that at a much earlier age. but look at it this way, when your my age[if you can't manage to do the hard work outside ] you've taught Finn and Lock well, they will be there saying" we will help you mom,no problem" good I find a time machine and trade your 2 for my 134 kids---jk,I couldn't trade mine either ,you have a good week-end too!

    1. Judy, I'll be starting from scratch in MN soon enough! Unless I'm lucky enough to find a house where the owner has created a gardening utopia and then threw up their hands and said "I hate it, I'm moving!". That's the house I will buy :)

  6. Erin, like you my garden is loaded with weeds too. The covered beds are loaded with them as well. This has been one crazy winter, if we can even call it winter. Your temps are wild. We got into the 70's but having some crazy wind!

    Your seed rack looks fantastic!

    1. Lorie, this mild winter is going to cause more than weed problems I think, the pests are going to be bad this year :(

  7. It's like we're living in two separate worlds now. hahaha. I was back at the old house last week and the ground was beginning to thaw in Massachusetts. Here in Vermont, everything is still frozen solid. I can't imagine walking outside and it being anywhere close to 80 degrees.

PS - will someone buy my house already???!!!

  8. Early for that weather, isn't it? This is the year of the yo-yo weather, that's for sure. We were down to low teens, then today we are up to near 50! Good grief. Does one ever win the war of weeds?
