A Working Weekend!

Finally! It's 50 degrees here today, sun is shining, and tonight looks as though it may be the last night for the low to go below 32 degrees. So I won't be posting til early next week, I'm working in the garden, yay! So far today, brush and perennials cut back, burn barrel going, BBQ got cleaned, and peas are soaking! Tonight we'll brew some Ale around the campfire, BBQ, and tomorrow we plant peas and set up the potato cages. Hope you all are having productive weekends too!

  1. Good stuff Erin. We spent half the day yesterday at your favorite store and have been assembling kid's furniture and painting walls ever since. :) WISHING I was out in the garden today. Have a good time, show us your progress on Monday OK?

  2. Wow, sounds like spring has come to Virginia Beach! You're making all of us in northern climates climb the walls. Our high today was 38°, but we got some melting anyway. I'll be thinking of you planting peas tomorrow. :o)

  6. Oh, what fun! It was in the mid 40's here today!!! Unfortunately, it's still getting down into the 20's at night. But, I'm thinking about starting some early greens on the South side of the house where the ground seems to have warmed up a bit.
    Enjoy your garden time!

  7. Whoa... I wish I had your constant energy, Erin! I spent today giving my plants a shower (watering/trying to get rid of spider mites) and watching Futurama on the computer. That's about it.

  8. Terrific! I did a teensy bit of outside work today. Then it was indoor work, and I'm pooped.

  9. Good for you! This has been our first weekend with temps above 40, but our lows are still in the 20's :( Still, I might be able to start getting the garden ready for when things really warm up!

  10. We are supposed to have a warm week, too, so I will be outside pretty much until the rain begins on Wednesday. Hope you are having as much fun as I expect to!

  11. We are still kinda chilly and VERY wet here in NE TX, so it's just yard work and breaking ground. I will be Square Foot Gardening while my husband who just loves to till and drive a tractor will be putting peas in rows. I informed him if he chose to he could tend it too, my back is in agony just thinking about bending and picking a half acre of rows again.

We are still WET, the tractor almost got stuck in the spots that retain water, I suggested raised beds there, but alas I don't know what I am talking about. I am finally starting seedlings, even though the last frost date is only 3 weeks away, we are expecting mucho grande rain for the next 5-6 weeks so that should time things just about right with the temps, drying time, and not getting stuck in the mud, I HATE walking out of my boots and having a sock full of red clay.

I love reading about your escapades, you have helped me through the winter haze, I look forward to keeping up with you and your garden, any chance you could share your putting up the harvest escapades, like canning vs freezing, and the electricity going out and losing half an acre of peas?!?! A pressure cooker is how I will use our tax refund to "stimulate" the economy!!!! HAPPY GARDENING!!!!

  12. Sounds like many of you are as anxious as I am for Spring! Valerie, I will definitely share my canning escapades! There was one I blogged about this past summer where I burnt myself pretty badly trying not to drop a jar... I still have a scar, LOL! I have been thinking of the pressure canner too, but will revisit that idea later in the summer. I WISH I had that many peas planted, there never seems to be enough! I do, however sympathize with the power outages, due to the hurricanes and Nor'easters, we get them pretty often so I can and freeze tomatoes so I have backup... and we finally got a generator 2 years ago that makes me feel a bit better, it's not huge but its enough to run the freezer and the water pump when we need showers! I am feeling a bit yucky today, something is going around, so I will probably not do an update until tomorrow since I didn't get any sleep last night!
