I'm not late!

I'm not so late after all!  Here's my garden calendar from last year...

That's February 23rd, so although I waited until the last possible minute to even start the spring plan, luckily it appears that I don't really even have to order seeds,  I have plenty in the stash so it looks like I'm right on track.

The girls know there was no rush - and it's a good thing there isn't an intruder in the house as well!  This is the less frequently seen side of neurotic herding dogs, they do in fact have an off switch - sometimes it works.

Do they think  I won't be able to see that they are on the couch?

The hubs now works crazy hours again, leaving me with peace and quiet after the boys go to bed.  The now famous "Garden Binder" and sharpened pencils are standing ready and tonight I will finally get my act together and get my plan in place.  There is quite a stack of seed catalogs that I can't bear to toss even though I have plenty of seeds already so you know there will be an order of an unnecessary assortment of edible horticultural fluff there :)

What else?

I made a big batch of beef jerky a few days ago... this is all that's left in the half gallon jar!

I will leave you with some fun -

I receive Martha Stewart's Living magazine, not sure why since I never subscribed, but her monthly "Martha's Calendar" is a must see:

the 17th looks like an exceptionally busy day

I wonder how long it took Martha to dust all those lightbulbs herself?!

I'm off to plan!

  1. Looks like you're all set for gardening. That's how it would be in this house too if I made beef jerky. It would be gone so fast I'd forget I even made it!
I dust off light bulbs all the time but we don't have very many and our house is very dusty because our washer and dryer is right in the hallway. So much dust from the dryer even though I clean it out every time I use it. Martha's calendar is very strange. Who writes "Hope for snow" on their calendar?

    1. Sparkless... you dust your lightbulbs? Wow, I'm wondering now what I'm missing... I've never done that!

    1. Robin, I admit you and a few others' posts about your seeds have spurred me to activity!

  3. You're about two weeks ahead of me with the seed starting, so I say you're not late at all! I have all my seeds though, so when it's time I'll go into it full speed ahead :-)

    1. Gran, I think we will be fine! Every year it seems I make a mental note to myself that I didn't need to start so early!

  4. You're not late, but I most definitely am! Got to get my bum in gear. And as for "Martha's Calendar"? Let's just say that I called her nasty names after seeing how organized her life is, even if it is just on paper. Witch.

    1. Carolyn, witch indeed LOL! Note to self for calendar "hope for sun", and "have garden boy come and fluff the beds" hahaha...

  5. I can't wait to see what you're going to do in your garden this year! You always grow the most amazing things and they do so well in your garden. I used to subscribe to MS Living and that calender always made me laugh.

    1. Anke, I will just be happy if I can get the weeds surrounding the beds out, my lawn is fast overtaking my garden it seems, stupid Bermudagrass.

  6. Is there such a thing as "unnecessary" horticulture? I think - no. And was I ever surprised to see that Martha and I are BOTH having our car(s) washed and detailed on the 20th!

    1. Susan, you are right - there is no such thing!

  7. Okay, first thing I need to do is pack my seeds up in a 3-ring binder like yours are. Much easier way to see what I have in stock. And the dogs look quite comfortable. I think Bella would like to come snuggle in between them.

    1. Ruth, you know Bella is welcome anytime, I have a feeling she'd fit right in! I know there are "better" ways for preserving seed but the binder is great for exactly that... seeing what you have! I am going on 5 years for some of those seeds so they do keep for a decent amount of time.

  8. Moving across the Atlantic, buying a house, and having a 4th baby have already made me feel stressed about being so "behind." This post is awesome but makes me feel like its too late! I will give it a good go though and plant what I can, picking your brain as much as you'll let me. I'm a perfectionist and if I can't do things perfectly or the way I invision, often times I just throw in the towel. But if I get 1 vegetable plant to yield some produce I'll be happy :)

    1. Steph, don't worry... you aren't late! That's the nice thing about this area, we have a long growing season so you will definitely get a nice garden going. I found it took about 3 years for me to really get into the groove with knowing how much I could plant, when was the best time, etc. Gardens are forgiving and luckily - pretty cheap, so we live and learn! When I started I was a mess, I have an OCD/Type A personality and wanted it all to be perfect, yet I had two little toddlers and never had time it seemed so I just decided to jump in, that's how the blog name came about! You will find it doesn't matter how small you start, it feels so good to have fresh veggies just for a salad, later you get addicted and have to start canning LOL
