Father's Day Weekend Wrap - Up!

Our party last night went great, met some fantastic new people and enjoyed conversation about gardens and where our food comes from with people whose eyes don't glaze over - you know what I mean, don't you?!  :)

Lots of kids here last night, I lost count LOL but they all seemed to have a good time in spite of temps in the mid 90's still at 6 pm.

Some of the "grown-ups", I'm in the blue ball cap and the gal I'm talking to in the black shirt is the much loved Gina of the  "Miss Gina let us gather the eggs, mom!" fame :)

not children, but not really "grown-ups" yet, either... LOL

More kids... it seemed we were growing them on vines last night!

Is this the best hostess gift ever?  Two guesses where the zinnias & eggs came from  :)

Thanks, Gina!

On to today - I did not get around to dealing with all the green tomatoes, but I had enough ripe Amish Paste to make a quart of sauce.  I also harvested some marjoram, oregano and basil to go in there with the last of last year's garlic.  Not much, but it will get used this week so at least I didn't have to fire up the canner just yet.  I will definitely be getting to the green tomatoes tomorrow.

Other than sauce making and bread baking early, it was Father's Day, and Daddy wanted to go swimming so that's what we did.  We didn't go to the beach but instead the pool on base, knowing it would be much less crowded today as well as a bit cooler, since their whole pool deck is full of big umbrellas.

Even though it was 91 out today, it stayed pretty gray and windy which made it tolerable.  We got our swimming done just as they were talking of closing the pool before the t-storms moved in.

The beans are finally coming in!  Hubby got a nice Father's Day meal with his favorites, steak, stuffed potatoes, beans and bread.  Maybe not the most imaginative thing, but definitely comfort food.

My dad was off flying to CT this weekend having a reunion with old submarine buddies so I'm sure he had a great Father's Day weekend even though he's in the air right now and I can't call him - Happy Father's Day, Dad!

This video is for my mom - she doesn't care for swimming at all, although she is very happy I'm sure that all of her offspring do swim LOL - but Loch went off the diving board today and wanted to "freak out grandma", so here ya go, mom - that's 12 feet of water your 8 year old grandson is jumping into :)

And Happy Father's Day to all of you, hope you were able to spend it with a special Dad, enjoy being that special Dad or talking about memories of a special dad with your family!

  1. Sounds like a perfect Father's Day. Glad to hear your party went well.
We are having hamburgers tonight. The kids and I bought the husband a weed eater (cause he broke the other one) and an ice shaver. You make the shaved ice and then pour a flavouring over it. YUM!
Happy Father's Day to all the dads!

  2. I love the face on your hubby as he's holding up his beer. Not one of his home brews!! Looks like the party went over very well for adults and kiddies alike.

Chicken Mama worked in at her office all day today so she joined us here on her way home for a low-key dinner with her dad. She presented him with a homemade card (the best) and apologies that the book she ordered STILL hasn't arrive in the mail!

I don't think dads get overly excited about Father's Day but we still wish all of them best wishes for a great year until the next one rolls around!

  3. I find it funny your Husband wanted to go swimming. You would think that he would not want to see water for quite the while :)

  4. Glad you'all had a good father's day-ours went well-along with the card I got my hubby looked like Homer Simpson in his underwear --Jerry[ my hubby ] laughed. He got his steak dinner too-the rest of us had old-fashioned wieners.

  5. Talking with people who's eyes don't glaze over! HA! So true! And what a treat! Sounds like a perfect get together and looks like it was fun!

Loch is a great swimmer! What little boy wouldn't want to freak Grama out a little? He's so little he barely had enough weight to make him go under! Gee how we all wish we didn't sink like bricks now!

    Happy Father's Day Dad!!!

Mama Pea, no home brew - the keg went dry that evening LOL! Glad you were all able to be together on Father's Day.

Jane, you would think, huh?!! LOL, he actually loves swimming and prefers it and biking to any kind of running or other workout. I think it drives him crazy that they are out on all that water most of the year yet never even get touched by a drop of it!

  10. APG, and I'm not too old to not enjoy freaking out my mom still as well LOL!

Jody, that's the truth, isn't it? Not everyone shares a passion about where there food comes from and exposing their kids to it, like minds have to stick together :)

Patty, Loch has really surprised us at his love of swimming. I'm happy he has found something he's good at since he's not the most coordinated kid in the world, things like soccer and football and baseball don't come easy to him at all, but he's a great swimmer and enjoys solo sports like kayaking and such, hubby and I are the same way.

Ribbit, hope your day was great, too!

  11. Stuffed potatoes? Yumm! Will you share your recipe? And, I hope you're enjoying your last day of being . . . 40!!!!! ;)

  12. Chicken Mama, you just had to "out" me! I was conveniently forgetful, is it tomorrow? LOL. The potatoes are easy-peasy... I just bake potatoes, scoop out the stuffing and mix with butter, sour cream, salt & pepper, garlic, and some chopped chives and maybe some blue cheese if I have any on hand, scoop the stuffing back into the skins, and bake until rewarmed. Bonus these go in the freezer well! During hubby's deployment I eat these all the time as my dinner after the kids are in bed, and if I'm eating a lot of them I don't put in the sour cream or blue cheese to cut down the fat and instead just rewarm and scoop cottage cheese on the top, yummy but a bit lower in fat.
