for the birds...

As if I didn't have enough to take care of with 2 boys...

"Are you my mommy?"

Now I have to go outside and babysit whenever I let Sprocket out.  We made up our own breed for her, the Outback Jack, since she's an Australian Shepherd/Jack Russell mix - but behavior-wise she's all Jack Russell.  It's hard being a baby bird with one of those running amok!  Marley just barks and barks warning me that Sprocket is up to no good!

I'd do just about anything for the birds that call our little oasis home.  Including asking hubby to put a roof over LadyDove's head so she won't get rained on.  You should have seen his face when I asked him - well, he won't agree to an aviary/pet bird so what am I to do?  It happens every year...

Perhaps I should sew her some gauzy white curtains around her basket to sway in the breeze?

Precious cargo in that flower basket...

Mama Dove is smart, she always picks this spot right outside the back door so she can see when I'm letting the dogs out and I give her a minute to herd the babies to safety under a bush.

So now there's one more living thing for me to talk to around here so I won't seem like the crazy lady who talks to nobody!

  1. I just love the first picture! I'm surprised that the mama didn't dive bomb you while you were taking the video of the baby.

  2. This time of year makes me nervous. So many obstacles around for those poor little birds. Dogs, snakes, hawks, angry chickens, its amazing any make it at all. How sweet of you to take the time to nanny them. They need all the help they can get.

  3. That's wonderful that you protect them and look out for them. As Jane said, it's a dangerous world out there for the little squirts. I love the dove - she is so beautiful!

  4. I would love to see you put some gauzy "curtains" on the dove basket! What a picture that would make. ('Course, your hubby might really begin to wonder about you . . . )

  5. If there was a "Mother of the World" award, I'd give it to you. Everyone should be so caring.

I want you to be my mama. *snort!*

  6. You are such a good person. I'm always so glad to hear about folks taking that extra bit of time out of their busy lives to do for the wildlife. We could certainly use a boatload more just like you.
(And yes, little gauzy curtains--too cute!)

  7. Awww what a cute robin baby. Glad to hear the dogs didn't get the baby. That's one smart mama bird.
I'm smiling over the dove's roof.

  8. Great bird footage, I can't believe that little feather-ball made it out of Sprocket's mouth unharmed!

I always admire the snakes in your garden, do you ever come across the real deal sunning there?

  9. I loved all the video you posted-felt like I was right there.I would love to see those curtains-lace I think but all kidding aside I have the same exact problem- a momma robin has made her nest just under the deck but high enough [ about 8 stairs up ] to keep out of harms way. I wish I had a video camera to record then as you do. all I have to do is move my Weber and grill deck protector to peak at the little ones. They just got there features, momma sits in the tree right outside my window- so if she zooms down-I'm out there seeing if there is a problem. they survived the storms over the week-end but a lady in her van 1 block away from my nieces in mpls wasn't so lucky.I only have to protect the baby birds from the wild children around here.
