Bedspace and Daydreaming...

First, here's the shirt!

I didn't finish Finn's shirt (haven't even started it!), but it's okay because when I checked the kids' calendar I found out that it's only Loch's class doing Hawaiian Day and not the whole school.  I had to promise Finn I would still do it soon, though.

Today's harvest was pretty standard for the season, more peas and lettuces.

The snap peas are still coming, but there are no new blossoms on the snow peas, so I ripped them out and sent them to the compost bin today.  I might add the heat index is now in the lower 90's so their time was limited anyways, I'm already more than pleased at the pea harvest this year.

Above, before the snow peas came out, below after... it looks so bare!  The peppers and beans that are also in that bed I'm sure are happier now to have more sun.

This brings me to now... I've been sitting at my desk looking at my seeds and surfing the web and trying to figure out what to grow there.  I am surprised that I seemed to have found myself with a little space to try something new if I want, oh the decisions!  I planted much more intensely this year, and have already planned for a 2nd crop of bush beans in the other pea bed when they come out, so what to do?  I'll probably dwell on this all night until I find I have wasted 12 hours on deciding what to plant in a 1x8 space in a bed, and end up putting some more boring bush beans or something there!

One thing I am not going to plant there:  weird dogs or weird carrots!  I washed this carrot up and threw it on top of hubby's salad he took to work today so he can amaze his friends and co-workers, haha!

So what would YOU plant if you found yourself with a little bit of extra space in your garden and you already had your regular things going?  I thought about chickpeas but then looked them up and saw they have like one per pod... can you imagine the labor involved there LOL?  I'll stick to the health foods store bin for those.

  2. That is a wonderful shirt! The collar, sleeves and button holes are perfect! You are quite amazing. As far as something new in the garden, do you plant chard? It is my favorite! Another fun thing to grow are podding radishes.

  3. Susan, thanks! The shirt took a lot of patience that I am surprised I had! I do grow chard fall through early spring, too hot here in summer. I think I may have the answer: sunspot sunflowers! They are only about 3 ft high and great for seeds, I'm thinking it would make a pretty backdrop for the beans, I'm trying hard to integrate "pretty" this year but still have food value :)

  4. The shirt looks great! If you can make a shirt I think you could make just about anything.

  5. I think sunflowers would be great in there.
Love the shirt-cripes I wish I could sew. There are so many GORGEOUS fabrics out there, yet I hate most everything I see in the stores. So, I end up in nothing but plain old t-shirts. But, I'm just not even going there......I have enough on my plate. Do you want to entertain a retired husband while TRYING to put in a garden and also dig 43,000,000 errant raspberries? It's harder than you can imagine..............

  6. AWESOME job on the shirt Erin! He looks like a little man in it! CutiePaTootie!

Sounds like you are going with sunflowers? I was going to suggest if you didn't want more regular bush beans what about black beans? I am trying them this year and looking forward to it.

Let us know what you decide for certain!

  7. That shirt is awesome! And Loch looks so handsome in it.
I was going to say sunflowers too! Or you could add some other flowers that are pretty like calendula. It grows to 10-12 inches tall, at least the variety I have does so it won't overshadow your peppers. Plus you can use it to make a very nice gardeners salve.

  8. Lookin' cool, dude! Mom did a great job on that shirt.

Sunflowers would look pretty. I just planted some gimongous ones along my back fence, now I'm sorta hoping the won't grow. I should have planted a smaller variety.

Gimongous is too a word :-(

  9. What a great shirt! He looks thrilled to be modeling it as well, ha!

Tough call as to what to plant. Flowers? Something for cutting maybe. I guess that may require transplants rather than seeds though.

  10. shirt-skirt- I guess I finally got it straight! I need a new mind too! great looking lettuce- I could really sink my teeth in to that be a salad or on tuna sandwich , my mouth is watering now and I don't want to go to the store and buy some shrived up old head -not after seeing that fresh stuff

  11. Jane, thanks! I'm not sure I "like" making something that tedious, but I'm glad at least I know I can now :)

Sue, you know what's really crazy? The shirts will end up costing twice what I would have paid to go and pick up a couple at Old Navy... quilts are more labor but end up being more cost effective LOL

APG, I think I am going with the sunflowers, I really want something pretty in there to break up all the green, and I am going to be "beaned out" this year it looks like, I have plenty of those started already.

Sparkless, great minds think alike LOL, but I already have some calendula going, I want to put it into soaps if I ever get around to trying that - I've been wanting to do that for 2 years now :) APG said she was going to try this year too - we'll have a soap challenge!

  12. Gran, he does look like a miniature college kid LOL! I planted the Mammoth ones along the fence this year, they are about an inch high and I just finished putting stakes next to them to keep the dogs from trampling them. I was flipping through my seeds and found that unopened packet of short ones from 2009 - I hope they sprout!

Kelly, I think definitely flowers! I already have some zinnias going in the garden since they get supported really well amongst the beans and stuff, I know it's a pipe dream to actually get the sunflower seeds before the birds, but we'll try anyway - we never give up, do we? I have a dentist appt mid-morning today that pretty much ruins my outdoor work plans, so I thought I would just "stop by" the nursery on my way home... let's see how much control I have now that I'm actually looking for annual flowers LOL...

Judy (2), you crack me up... you definitely need a day at the farmers market, I can't even look at that grocery store stuff now :)

  13. Love the shirt and glad it was lucky!! I like that carrot - love them when the grow into all those funky different shapes. I'm not sure what I would grow if I had extra space, but I have faith that you will figure out something fabulous to do!
