Does anyone remember my little experiment this year? I wanted to grow corn but the only space I had was a 8 x 12 patch of partial shade - free seed, so why not? LOL....
This is why not...
Stunning, isn't it? Yes, this is the whole plant :)
A military spouse's take on blooming where you are planted. I continue to pretend I am living on my dream farm while in reality, I live on a military base, gardening in a plot alongside a Navy flightline, with half of my homesteading supplies perpetually packed in boxes and have a habit of being overly involved in every community we live in. I'm a busy mom to 2 boys and a spouse to a Navy sailor soon nearing retirement. I love this chaotic life wouldn't trade it for anything!
I found out the hard way that corn really needs 8 hours of sun, or doesn't do well at all. I tried it in 5 hours one year, and it looked pitiful.
ReplyDeleteHey, ya know those itty-bitty ears of corn they sell that are so expensive? You grew your own! (Forgive me if I mention yours are not the most attractive looking ears of little corn I've ever seen . . . )
ReplyDeleteIf I remember correctly, when you were contemplating sowing the corn in that shady spot, I was the dunderfutz that encouraged you to go ahead and try it.
EG, I had about 4 1/2 hrs of "filtered" sun at best! I did, however, replant into a sun filled bed that became empty a few weeks ago - that corn is already taller than the shade corn that grew for months LOL
ReplyDeleteMamaPea, nah, I would have done it anyways LOL! I think the general consensus from everyone was "why not"?!! Why not, indeed! But look who I was asking, a bunch of enablers that can't control themselves at planting time hee hee!
No offense, all you "enablers"! You know you have had "experiments" LOL
Maybe it was our "free seed"! It doesn't look like mine, that is growing in full sunlight, is going to be any different. I grew corn behind my shed one year. It didn't get a lot of sun, with a 6' fence on two sides and a shed on a third side, but the corn was excellent. Candy corn, if I remember correctly.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny we both checked our itty-bitty ears and blogged about them at the same time!
AG, uh...no... your post this morning inspired me to go outside and face the truth LOL! And that is EXACTLY where my corn grew, fence on two sides and shed on the 3rd side!
ReplyDeleteWe'll let you come back, corn or no! Can't you hear us calling to you? The sound of the Minnesota siren (for you folks down south dealing with the triple digit temps) -- "74 degreeeees ..... 74 degreeeees ....." :)
ReplyDeleteUh-oh! Haha. We'll that's what experimenting is for right?
ReplyDeleteToo bad for your corn, but wasn't it fun to experiment? I do it all the time!
ReplyDeleteHumm, Bonsai corn!
ReplyDeleteShall we try peppers and tomatoes next?
Thanks Jo! I will have to repent when I get back! Maybe forced corn detasseling LOL
ReplyDeleteMeemsnyc & thyme, experiments are fun, unless you forget about them and they get out of control! (done that too!)
DaBeardedOne, yep, that's what I was going for - Bonsai! LOL
Awwww! That is sooo... lopsidedly cute. I hope my less-than-perfect-light-situation corn at Mr. Yogato does well--it's not as tall as I think it could be, but with the drought and everything, I'm not surprised!
ReplyDeleteI have some shaded corn myself...At least now I know what to expect.
ReplyDeleteYou can always throw them at passing cars! haha.
