What's better than two Australian Shepherds?

Answer: Two Aussies greeting their Daddy after a 14 month deployment!

I thought that video was good preparation for what the next year holds in store for our family! Deployment is right around the corner now, and I plan on writing some posts about the "Big D" and how our family copes and dealing with the special challenges that come with the territory. I have been in denial all summer. Although he has been gone most of it, we have been getting to 'borrow' him every few weeks! Well, it won't be long now until the real deal, and I need to start preparing. I have been through many deployments, but every one is different. This time around will be the first time the kids will be old enough to be affected greatly by it. Compound that with missing Thanksgiving, Christmas, both the boys' birthdays, and the entire school year - you can see I will have my hands full! So occasionally, you will read posts that are related to the deployment haphazardly intertwined with gardening! What a strange mixture, but that is my life! With the garden doing a 'whole lot of nothing' in winter (how many posts can I really do about shallots & garlic, lol?), I am hoping that blogging will allow me to keep some sanity and that you will continue to follow along with my Military Wife Adventures! We are a strange breed indeed - if I stray into Militarese, just holler at me to speak English please and I will clarify! My house is filled with acronyms and strange words for common objects and during the pre-deployment and deployment phase it only gets worse! I hope you have fun and shed a few tears with me, your continued kind words and encouragement are always appreciated. Although a good cyberspace kick in the butt is called for sometimes too if I get too whiny!

  2. A 14-MONTH DEPLOYMENT??!! I. don't. know. how. you. handle. it.

I blubbered all the way through the video.

I know there is a lot in the world today that is not "fair." But it's not fair for you or the boys to have to do without their daddy for anything like a year's absence.

  3. I haven't had to deal with anything that long, yet! That video was posted by a fellow blogger over at Mil SpouseBuzz! But, the 12-14 month deployment will be our turn, after this next one!

  4. The video made me cry too, but my first though was "this is why I love dogs", and my second thought was "how are you not slobbering all over him too?", lol. Then I realised you were likely there when the ship came in, DUH!

I give the military and their families all the credit and respect in the world, that must be one tough road to travel for everyone. My heart is breaking for your boys, what a long time to be without Daddy! And you, I am proud of you for being Mom and Dad for 14 months. I would be in a rubber room. Seriously.

I hope we do see an honest version of life with a spouse on leave, it helps me to remember that there are people out there sacrificing everyday for my well-being, and to add them to my prayers.

  5. I'll be right here with you, Erin. Feel free to get as whiny as you wish, you'll deserve it. And tell your husband we said "thank you".

  6. Erin, I know you're not soliciting praise or empathy, but you're getting both from here. My 5 yr old boy watched this and shrieked when he saw the "army man" and more importantly the "army puppies." He said, that man and his puppies are my hero.

Honestly, Erin...you're mine. I don't think people take enough time to realize what army wives endure.

But I must tell you how loudly I busted a gut when the one puppy was getting love and the other was standing back, barking, and waiting its turn.

    Just precious.

  7. Having been a military wife myself, I know how it feels, to an extent. Fortunately, Hubby never had to be gone that long. God bless you, I'll keep you in my prayers along with a nephew heading out to Afghanistan with a company of Army Rangers. Thanks for being there for him while he's being there for us.

  8. Ooops, feel the need to elaborate! Apparently the caption did not transfer over from the video! This is not my husband, lol...but an accurate representation of what it feels like when they come home! This was posted on SpouseBuzz by a fellow military spouse. You guys are awesome, it's so nice to know that there really are people out there keeping our servicemembers and families in their thoughts and prayers. Thank You on behalf of all of us! I just couldn't resist this video due to the Australian Shepherd thing... :) my favorite breed, along with Border Collies - I'm a sucker for my neurotic farm dogs!
