All is well!

Just a quick post to let you all know that Sandy was very anti-climactic here.  We did just fine - we didn't even lose power, that's a first!  We were very fortunate, we never saw winds above 55 mph, the only things to deal with were 12 inches of rain and the full moon tide cycle.  Flooding, but only streets and not the house.  The fence is down everywhere, but then again that happens all the time and isn't really considered a problem since it's easily fixed with a little work.  I did wake up one morning to the roof leaking, which upset me since the roof isn't very old, but hubs inspected and found that the wind was driving the rain up under the shingles and a nearby roof vent, it was easily controlled with a towel and bucket and ceased to be a problem as soon as the wind slacked up.  He'll inspect more once things have dried out.

My thoughts really go out to those up in Jersey, DE, MD and NY.  Uffda, they are going to have a long road ahead.  You bloggers affected please check in when you are able and know that our family is praying for you.

Musings...
-Anyone watching Gov. Chris Christie?  The guy is tops in my book!  Straight shooter, likable, unapologetic and says things like "We'll pay for it somehow - even if I have to cut programs we'll take care of this." Ha - who is going to argue when it's put that way?  I'm not sure if I'm impressed by him sometimes or just the fact that a government official can use so few words and be effective without any B.S.  Love the guy...

-Looks like  will be another "no lesson learned" storm for our local non-preppers, so I can expect to see the same madness the next time around...

-Wish the news would release more about the HMS Bounty Tall Ship sinking off the coast here, I'd love to know what they were doing off the coast in the middle of a hurricane.  Sad to hear about the loss of life, but it is interesting that the ship sunk right in the middle of the "Graveyard of the Atlantic", isn't it?  I toured the ship during the OpSail 2012 event here, you may remember my post about all the tall ships this summer, it is an incredible vessel.

Coast Guard photo:

You can read more here

a photo of her with sails up - some of us have seen the ship in 'Mutiny on the Bounty', but even kids would know this ship as the one in "Pirates of the Caribbean"

- I keep thinking about the people going through this further up the coast, just devastating.  Experience is the best preparedness tool and nothing can substitute for it, sadly many of these areas just don't have that tool.  Next time they will but I sure am praying for them now.

Anyway... my damage is minimal but I still need to get to it - leaves stuck all over the floor in here, that always happens!  Put away some supplies I had standing by and then to deal with the yard.  It will be awhile before I can get out there and work much since the water table is saturated so it's a big puddle, but the fence needs to get back up because I don't care for walking dogs on a leash!  Still getting 35-40 mph gusts and light drizzle, but I'll take it over the rain of the last 3 days.

Take care everyone in the northeast, post pics and status updates when you can and let us know you are okay!

  1. So glad to hear you are safe and sound, and that Sandy didn't cause you any suffering. At least you were prepared. Better safe than sorry!

  2. Glad to hear you're doing well and that you didn't sustain too much damage. It doesn't matter how many storms/emergencies happen, there will always be those that refuse to prepare. Sad.

  3. I'm in NE Texas but still wanted to check on the east coast this am, turned on the Weather Channel live feed online and Christie was at it again talking about the mayor of Atlantic City, I can't wait to see how that turns out. I loved his statement to the people NJ the other day, "Don't be stupid". Not long ago here in TX we had to pass a law for stupid, basically it states if you go under a bridge that is flooded (you know the kind that says low bridge, do not go under when there is standing water), or other things like that, and get stuck and responders have to respond, it's a $500 fee, this law has cut down on putting responders in harms way. People think they can "stick it out" and no one else will get hurt, but then they have to be rescued and the first responders are put in danger. OOPs looks like I need to find something to do, I'm climbing on my soap box and all I wanted to do was run by and see how you were faring, I'm glad you and yours are all okay, and I loved the post about thinking out of the box for supplies, but as Ron White says "You can't fix stupid"....

  5. Good to hear you missed out on the really bad damage (for a change!) this one could have caused. I know your folks back here in Minnesota were probably really worried during this one until they knew you were all okay.

Doesn't it seem that in the last several years our country has experienced an awful lot of "once in a hundred years" disasters? I can't help but wonder what's next . . .

  6. Me again, I posted my first post in over a year and it included 2 pictures of the Longhorns that reside in the pasture behind our house. I thought your young'ones might get a kick out of the pictures. They are on today's post at my walkin' in sunshine blog. Have a great day!

  7. So glad to hear you are all fine and Sandy wasn't too strong. The weather keeps getting stranger and stranger with records every year being broken. I'm almost afraid of what this winter is going to be like.
Most of the ski hills here have a rule that if you ski out of bounds knowingly and need to be rescued you have to pay for your own rescue. Now if only they'd make more of those rules for stupid people just like Valerie was talking about we'd have way less stupid around.

  8. I think we had no doubt that you guys would be safe---you've got your head on --but yea, I think those up the coast that never have these problems--that has to be a MESS.

  9. So glad that you're ok! And yes, I agree, bloggers from that area need to check in when they can. I also agree about the ship sinking, and wondered why it was out and about in the middle of the storm. So sad, but kind of neat where it sunk.

  10. So glad all is okay. My inlaws said in PA it was as though Sandy split, hitting hard above and below.

  11. Very happy to hear that y'all are okay. I was so sad to hear about the HMS Bounty Tall Ship - I'd like to know what they were doing out there, too. Such a beautiful ship. We were spared in my little neck of the wood - just a lot of very strong, sustained wind gusts and minor damage. NYC was really devastated, but they always pull themselves up by their boot straps. I am VERY glad we didn't get the 2 feet of snow, though.

  12. Happy to know that you and your family are fine! I enjoyed the previous humorous-yet-informative post on preparing for disaster, and it is SO great to know that, even though you were plenty well-prepared, most of the preps weren't desperately needed.
