I think I have mentioned it before, but our fall/winter so far have been terrible weather-wise for growing fall stuff, even though it was 28º this morning, Saturday it was 70º! I had all but given up on my lettuces ever sprouting, but we finally have liftoff!
As long as it doesn't warm up and bake them to death again we just might get half a salad for one person...
The rest of the garden is an absolute mess. I'm coming out of the funk I've been in and starting to look forward to cool days spent working on cleaning it all up out there. Things are growing despite my inattentiveness, however...
The scallions above I was too lazy to pull, but now we are enjoying pulling up nice sized onions from them :)
Did somebody say it's January? You'd never know it from all the DILL sprouting from fallen seed! If I had known it was going to be so warm I would have tried winter cukes LOL... I can never seem to time that dill with the cukes... or the cilantro with the tomatoes for that matter.
And this? I don't even remember what it is, Texas something or other... citrus outside in January?!
Speaking of messes... how is everyone doing on all the home canning consumption? I bet I win for messiest cabinet! The canning supplies were all so neat and orderly in September, now everytime I do dishes I am just flinging empty jars and lids into there, I think I better organize it before I have broken glass to pick up!
As far as New Year's Resolutions go, I've got nothing spectacular. I have barely even had time to register that it's a new year yet. I'm thinking the usual, finances, budgeting, garden, family time... rinse and repeat - Happy New Year!
How can you possibly figure out what to plant when with the absolutely crazy winter season you've been having? Makes me think I like our strict delineations of seasons. No way do I have to hassle with what will grow out in the garden now. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI need to do some sorting in my pantry to see if I can fit all empty canning jars in there. Right now they're still stored downstairs in our small basement . . . which means I pile empty ones in my quilt studio (What? That doesn't make sense?) until I make a trip to the basement.
Happy New Year Erin. It is amazing what pops up in the December garden in abnormally warm temps isn't it?
ReplyDeleteStrange, strange weather we're having, hugh? We were in the 60's just a few days ago & now I've got the wood stove cranked because it was only 14 degrees this morning. Wacky!
ReplyDeletePS - don't fret about the canning supply mess.....the canning gnomes come and tidy that all up, right? Right? Please say there is such thing as a canning gnome, 'cause that's what I'm waiting for!!
Happy New Year! The weather's been strange like that up here too.
ReplyDeleteIt never got warmer than 15 today so maybe this is heading your way. I will be glad to get rid of it. Yep I have canning jars everywhere too. No sooner do you get them all put away that it is time to get them out again.
ReplyDeleteIt's turning crazy cold and windy here today! Hopefully this shot of cold weather will start killing off some bugs in the cold frames.
ReplyDeleteWe don't do resolutions. I do have some goals for this year though. I'm starting with cleaning out and up this house....one floor at a time. That will take me all month! I've been in the basement all day working on the canning and gardening supplies. I have no idea who gets everything so messy down there! Must be the gremlins!
Crazy weather, isn't it? I had a pansy growing out by my back door a couple days ago. A pansy!
ReplyDeleteI know they're cold tolerant, but really, end of December in NORTHERN Michigan????? Will I EVER get to ride the ARC-TIC-CAT?
:)
Yup, it has been a crazy winter even here. We still have no snow after our early dumping we got only small amounts through Dec. A light dusting meant we didn't have a brown Christmas but we didn't have enough snow to go sledding.
ReplyDeleteLettuce from the garden in the winter, now that would be a treat. I hope your lettuce starts growing and your weather evens out so as not to fry your garden. Happy New Year too!
We are having the same sort of temps here, only we get to the 60's daytime, so I was able to pull a teeny carrot! Good luck with the salad!
ReplyDeleteWe made it above freezing here today and it's forecast for 49 Thursday and Friday! Go figure. I should have planted some spinach or something for fall/winter. It's just that for the past few years it has actually been winter this time of year. Of course, maybe if I plant some now I'll trigger winter weather, Hmmm.....
ReplyDeleteOrganizing the pantry is on my to-do list for the week. I've also been shoving empties into the pantry and things need to change before I have a catastrophic failure.
Judy
haha I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has canning debris everywhere!
ReplyDeleteWe've had weird weather here also... not our usual rain, wind, etc. I am debating putting some "cool-weather" lettuce into the green house. I have a shelf of canning jars that look similar to yours, because I'm too lazy to take them to the out to the garage.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year my Friend!
ReplyDeleteH even I have canning jars about and I don't can,but have friends that do. if I set them in the cupboard ,the boys will use them to drink out of ,what do you except in hillbilly heaven [ but if they fill the big ones with "MILK"GRRRRR -I should buy a cow]
ReplyDeleteMother Nature seems to do what she wants right now... We went from the 60's down to the low 30's during the day and 19 and 24 at night. Seems crazy...
ReplyDeleteMama Pea, nothing this year in the weather is making any sense, stay tuned to see a real strange event we just had LOL!
ReplyDelete***
Kelly & Jody, I'm waiting for volunteer tomatoes to pop up anytime now...
***
Carolyn Renee, I have NOT heard of these canning gnomes... are you keeping them hidden? Time to let go and send them down here LOL!
***
Jane & Robin, yep - we got that cold snap yesterday afternoon! The wind is howling...
Sparkless, that's usually one thing I can count on in winter, spinach and maybe some hardy lettuces, but this year it's been pitiful.
ReplyDelete***
Sue, who knows, maybe those pansies are always there you just don't see them under all the snow LOL!
***
Author, Judy, Ruth & Anke - it's so strange that this weather seems to be wacky everywhere as I hear you all chime in from every direction - Mother Nature should do a better job on sending out a memo so we could put in or change our seed orders LOL!
Chipmunk, I just officially listed "clean canning cupboard" on my to-do list for tomorrow, I swear the next person that opens that door is going to get injured!
ReplyDelete***
Dani, Happy 2012 to you, too!
***
Judy, nothing wrong with sippin from a Mason jar! I even use mine as vases, can't imagine a prettier vessel for flowers than a canning jar :)

Gotta tell you how refreshing I find this. I'm behind, and my canning area is a mess. And I live in Earthquake Country! Sigh.
ReplyDeleteHere's to second winds.
We just got through frigid weather and now are heading to ... 40? Eek. My canning "area" is very similar to yours. Unfortunately, my filled jars are as unorganized as the unfilled. Time for inventory! Hoping you and your family have a very prosperous and happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI've been so extremely busy with traveling and having holiday guests over that I haven't had any time to visit your blog! Catching up on your posts. I can't believe you have stuff growing in the winter! Wow! I had some chard still going strong but the last frost killed it all. My canning supplies are a hot mess also!
