What's a girl gotta do to get a day off around here?

Or to be exact, 4 days off?

Don't get me wrong, this is a dumb thing to complain about, but when we're on the 2nd consecutive week of 1-teens heat indexes, 45 minutes in the garden catching up on the harvest is too long for comfort!

yes, that is a pumpkin... in July?

My mini-break is over.  I wanted to post about our time off with family, but the harvest has other plans for me today so I hope to be able to blog and catch up on everyone else's this evening!  ....So how are us gardeners ever supposed to have a "real" summer vacation?  Never mind, I know the answer LOL :)

  1. Our summer vacation is in the dead of winter with our sewing machines, seed catalogs, crochet and knitting needles!

Glad you will be busy today with all those lovely things! Hope you enjoyed your family too!

  2. We always vacation in the end of September. It is the only month no crops go in, need harvested or plowed, and I am sick of canning by then. Plus the mosquitos are usually dead most places we go. ALWAYS a bonus.

  3. I picked a tomato yesterday. One tomato. Thank heavens for the beans, or I'd just give up.

  5. LOL! And can you imagine if it was a good year for the garden? You'd be up to your ears in garden produce and chained to the kitchen trying to preserve it.

Jane, I would love to vacation in Sept/Oct but the kids are in school then, grrr..... that's my favorite time of year both here and back home!

Granny, I'm hearing a lot of that this year from everyone - I sure hope next year is better.

Sue, I guess I did LOL, one year we went to MN in the summer and when I got back my neighbor said she wasn't sure how big those cukes should get.... they were like yellow watermelons haha, but fast forward a few years and she's now an avid gardener herself :)

Sparkless, I sure don't know what I'd do if I didn't have so many issues with disease and bugs... it's a good thing I planted twice as much stuff this year but if I didn't have any problems it would have been way too much.

  8. I guess I'm amazed at how much you are getting from the garden. I would have thought it would all be fried to a crisp in all that heat! I know you'll use every speck of what you have though. Good girl!

  9. Mama Pea, I don't think I give the plants enough credit out there, they DO keep producing in spite of everything, that's why I think I'm going to stop killing myself out there and stop watering and all that goes along with it for the rest of the season - I'll just see what happens then LOL
