Memorial Day Weekend - Day 3!

The Staycation is going well!  Beach today...

If the kids would put half as much effort into helping me as they did digging this hole, I'd be on easy street!

Here's Finn happily digging before we decided to surprise-bury him...

In true "bad parent" fashion, we buried him up to his neck and said "bye, don't let the ghost crabs eat your face tonight, we'll be back in the morning"...

After realizing we were kidding, we got this smile.

It didn't stop there, after dumping off the beach gear, we headed to the Y to their outdoor pool, more low cost fun!

Eureka, I think he's got it!  One thing I make sure of is that my kids know how to swim.  Not only is an essential life skill in a family that loves to kayak and canoe, it makes my life a whole lot easier.  Finn's a little rough still, but he's getting it, and they have been in swimming lessons for a year now.  Loch needs to be swimming more than once a week, since he has expressed an interest in joining the swim team here.  Lots of work to do!

Cheap "staycation" dining tonight in the backyard.  Along with brats, I made up a quick potato salad and on a whim threw in some extra snow peas, it turned out really good, the peas seemed to fit well.

We are now finishing up the evening by burning some of the debris collected after the storm.

It's now 7:15 pm and they are still doing something involving water out there, as I just saw a kid run by the back door soaking wet LOL, no doubt they will collapse into a heap pretty soon!  One more day of this....   :)

***
coming back to amend the post with a follow up - apparently they aren't done yet, since they tore through the house with a bag of marshmallows... went outside to take a photo and from the looks of their faces they will fall out any time after the sugar rush LOL...

  1. I'm so jealous of your time on the beach. Lying on a beach in the sun listening to the waves is when I'm most relaxed.

I'm jealous of your tan lines already showing.

I'm jealous of the way Loch can swim, much better than I can.

I'm jealous of the dinner you had tonight although we had a yummy potato salad, too, but no snow peas.

I'm not jealous of your roasted marshmallows. Never liked them even as a kid.

Okay, I'm done being jealous now.

I bet I'll sleep as good as the boys tonight 'cause I spent the day outside working in the fresh air. It felt good and we got a lot done. Have a great day tomorrow! (We've really enjoyed following you on this Memorial Day Weekend!)

  2. Mama Pea, ha! I don't like marshmallows either... I'm the one who will quietly sit back and eat all the chocolate bars so when they want to make s'mores there aren't any LOL!

I'm glad you got a day full of accomplishments, I've got "nuthin'" for today :) Lately I've felt that the kids are wanting "things" a bit too much, so I wanted to show them how much fun we can have with just the price of gasoline to drive us around... today Finn amazed me with a tired "thank you, Mommy" on the way home from the beach. That's all I need to keep going for another year or so LOL

  3. Love your farmers tan.and it looks like your at a EXPENSIVE BEACH HOTEL.YOU DESERVE IT AFTER THE TIME YOU HAD A FEW DAYS AGO [ STORM]. THE KIDS DON'T GET SUN-BURNED? OR YOU JUST HAVE TO APPLY SUN-SCREEN EVERY 5 MIN. THEY ARE NOT IN THE WATER!

  4. Judy, LOL, I'm more of a "no-star" beach hotel type - give me a tent and a "crick" any day over hotels and cabanas :) They boys definitely have sunscreen on!

  6. I had a post and then it wouldn't let me post it and it got lost! Grrrr

The beach and the pool all in one day! Now that's a treat. I wish we could have a fire in our yard but we live within city limits. Nothing better than a nice fire to sit around and roast marshmallows.

Your staycation sounds perfect to me.

  8. My god, woman---I need sleep after reading this!
You're giving these kids some GREAT memories-well, except for the buried in the sand with the ghost crabs eating him part (LOL!!!)...He might need therapy later for that. Double LOL!!!

  11. Your tan lines look very familiar. ;-) You guys are lucky to live so close to the beach. Our girls keep telling us they want to go, but for us it involves at least 6 hours in the car. One day...
I love your fire pit by the way, I guess hubby built it?

  12. Beach AND pool in the same day? You kids are kah-razy!! I need some of your staying power, I think I would have required a nap mid-day. We went to your favorite place in the world yesterday, and now we need to construct my new pantry/wine shelving today in the basement. That is our memorial Day weekend fun. :)

  13. I know, the beach AND pool was a little much, but they sure slept well!

Kelly, you have to post photos! I love a good IKEA post :)

  14. Sporting the flip flop feet tan with an awesome blankie right next door! :)

Ouch, Dad looks a tad sunburned to me.

I only eat marshmallows if they are burnt to a crisp. Then I eat the outside and burn them again.
