random stuff

The kids are on spring break - anyone else out there want to see this little vacation disappear?  Does anyone out there really have the money to actually go somewhere during this little hiatus?  Never mind, I don't want to know if there are LOL.  I personally wish they could do away with this and just get out of school a week earlier, they already go to school until the last week of June and it really interferes with actual summer plans where we might have enough time to head back to MN for a bit.  We drive, as it's cheaper and also we take our dogs everywhere, so one week is definitely NOT enough time to do this, and sorry to my fellow northerners, but a week of mud season isn't much of a temptation this time of year :).  So what to do with them?

The other night we took the boys and a friend to see a movie on base.  I really hate movie theaters and we only go about once or twice a year for the kids, but I should do it more since they really enjoy it, and on base the movie is $2 and for $3 they get a kids tray that includes popcorn, drink and small candy - where else can you get that anymore?  Here's a tip though:  if you have kids and they want to see "Rango", send the hubby or someone else, it was horrible!  I kept thinking I should have sent hubby and I could have stayed home for some sewing LOL, but it was nice seeing them have such a good time!

Upon cleaning out my purse of spilled Goobers from our theater trip before they melt, I ended up dumping out the contents of the purse... anyone else have things like this in their purse?  LOL, the photo is missing the length of 550 cord that was in there somewhere... just what do you suppose I might need this for?  Maybe a mob job?  Maybe a redneck style gut & clean game job while on the way to music practice?

Upon arriving home from some errand, we found Sprocket up to her old tricks...

Oh yes... those are my glasses...

I finally gave in to Finn's pleas for a "big boy haircut"... I don't normally get all emotional and stuff about my kids growing up, but this haircut aged him about 3 years and I want his bowl cut back!  I normally cut their hair but had to have the initial big change done for me... I think I'll pay him to grow it back :)

Today I will be planting the rest (only 3 more) of the tomatoes, the eggplant and maybe the peppers.  The nighttime lows are really warming up and the days are now into the 80's.  Below, check out the 'Jake Gyllenhall' (mystery heirloom) tomato, it's the one on the left.  I have 2 of these, and they are HUGE.  What's even crazier is that they are sturdy like a tree!  There is an heirloom Long Keeper next to it for comparison, as that's the size of most all of my seedlings.  I'm thinking maybe I should plant those right up in the patio area so they can serve as a nice shade tree come August?!

Anyone else dared put in the peppers and eggplant yet?

  1. We never had a spring break in grade school or high school. Wonder why they do that now? I love the new hair cut. I think Finn looks quite handsome. Besides, with out the glasses you might not even notice his new hairstyle. See Sprocket was way ahead of you. They don't say those dogs are one of the smartest breeds for nothing.

  3. How great that the movies are so cheap for you! I am sure your kids appreciated it! :) I don't even have kids yet, but know how painful that first "big boy" haircut is going to be!
I'm definitely not putting my peppers or eggplant out for good right now, but I live in St. Louis, and we've got another week or two before the night temperatures will be stable enough for that to happen! I don't get the luxury of your weather here! :)

  4. Oh your poor glasses!

I almost put in the peppers and eggplant in this weekend in wall o waters. But, I decided to wait one more week. Sowed some beans in walls though as a little experiment. Hopefully they will not rot.

  5. I've only been brave enough to plant peas and onions. I did plant pansies in my window box. Does that count? I think Finn looks very handsome in his big boy cut. What is it with animals and glasses? My cat keeps trying to knock off my reading glasses. But eat them??

  7. We have a 2 week spring break here and can never afford to go anywhere. The weather is horrible in March too so the kids stay inside and are bored.
Finn looks great in his "big boy haircut."
That is one monster tomato plant!
Peppers?! I haven't even put in my garden yet!

  8. Love the haircut! He's not a baby anymore, Mom *sniffle*.

With our temperatures running a good 15 degrees below the norm for this time of year, I'm probably looking at another 3 weeks before the tomatoes and peppers can go out. I can usually sneak the tomatoes in the last week of April, but not this year!

  9. Our spring break was last week and it was several weeks later than usual. It used to be in mid March (which was a nice break) but this year they moved it to April. Seems pointless, considering we only have 4 more weeks of school now. Oh, we stayed home, too. ;-) We saw Rango a while back and we were all disappointed - the previews made it look so funny...
Our tomatoes and peppers have been planted for about 3 weeks now and (knock on wood) so far so good...

  10. Great haircut!
At our house, spring break was 'child labor week' while we did the kitchen. I honestly think they would have preferred school! LOL!
As for planting- HAHAHAHAHA! I was hoping to finally plant peas but it started raining and now it's supposed to freeze again tonight. sigh... no gardening for me yet... patience..... I can't set out peppers and tomatoes until mid May.

  11. Jane, smart HA! Herding dogs are a nightmare without anything to herd LOL, but my favorite nonetheless :)

Judy "2" :) - we are in need of some serious car repairs, too!
    ***
Megan, I keep forgetting about the theater on base, even though it's right in our own backyard! As long as the kids stay quiet throughout the National Anthem played beforehand, it's a good deal :)
    ***
Kelly, this time of year is such a guessing game for when to plant!

  12. Susan, Finn really wanted that haircut but I remain unconvinced...!

Dani, he really does look old! I told him I'm going to expect a lot more from him now :)

Sparkless, I swear spring break was invented by the Disney folks just like Valentine's Day and the card companies LOL

Gran, it will be here before you know it, and we'll once again be counting your lbs of tomatoes :)

  13. Judy, that was an excellent usage of spring break! Your kids are learning so much! I am so tired of those HGTV shows where the people look at a perfectly good house but are scared away by stupid things like ugly cabinet hardware, paint and carpet! At least your kids will be able to see past all that changeable dumb stuff and be able to value property well!

Anke, have you seen Mars Needs Moms or Gnomeo and Juliet? Those are on their list, too. I admit that the garden gnomes that reflect the dysfunctional family behavior of their house occupants has me intrigued LOL!

  14. Wow, what a bargain on the movies! We pay $12.50 just for a movie ticket here! And don't get me started on concessions! Wow, those tomato plants look fantastic. Mine are just getting started. I can't wait until they get as big as yours.

  15. Geesh, I could have sworn I'd commented on this post of yours already. Well, I guess that's what happens when you live in a fantasy world and talk to yourself in your head a lot. Sigh.

Yes, Finn does look about 14 now. Bring back the bowl cut. It was sooo cute. But that's probably exactly the reason he'll never agree to have it again.

Sprocket!! Uh-oh, bad doggie. The price we pay for having animals!

Do you know I truly can't remember the last time Papa Pea and I saw a movie in a theater. I remember Chicken Mama and I going to see "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood." What year was that?

What have I planted in my garden? Well, I'm still waiting to see if my Sweet Pea seeds can recover from severe frostbite.

  16. meems, that's the price of a regular theatre ticket here, too, which is why we don't go to movies as a rule, but this one theater is actually on the base, I just keep forgetting about it!

Mama Pea, do you know those are the first prescription glasses I'd ever gotten? Even paid extra for the "Transitions" lenses - ugh! I think the last time (only time?) hubby and I have been to a "grownup" movie together was about 8 years ago LOL, we only do it because of the kids. I would much rather have the $40 and just stream it on Netflix someday LOL. I think the Ya Ya's were about 8 years ago, too LOL, but what a GREAT movie that was!

  17. Erin, we have not seen Gnomeo and Juliet or Mars needs Moms - neither girl really wanted to see them. We did get Megamind and we all really liked it...
