Holiday Exhaustion!

Thanksgiving weekend happenings...

Unlike Mama Pea, who didn't want to be rude and photograph the inside of her cake while at a friend's house, I had no trouble shoving people out of the way... "I gotta get a picture before you hog it all!"

While my version of Mama Pea's Almond Cranberry Cake didn't look quite as good on top as hers, it was a hit and the entire thing was gone by the end of the night!  I will definitely be making this again.  Everyone had trouble describing it - most seemed to agree it was in between a coffee cake and a very moist rum cake - (no rum in there, but I bet it would be good!)

Below:  the kid crew

And can you believe this?  It was so nice that afternoon, the kid's table was outside!

Below:  I started these artichoke seedlings last spring and gave my friend one...
mine died and hers looks spectacular...

One of the best parts of Thanksgiving, the after dinner fire

Another shot of someone getting a little carried away while feeding it

After dinner, I was happy to receive this on my phone - Here's hubby getting his advancement/promotion certificate and 3rd chevron (stripe) for his uniform this past week.  He looks as if he needs FOOD... he said he's lost about 20 lbs, unintentionally... he was already slim!  We need to feed this man over Christmas.

I don't do early morning Freaky Friday shoving matches, but sometimes I do like to get out and just enjoy the madness a bit.  We went out in the afternoon to check out Bass Pro... mostly because it makes us feel close to hubby (he loves it) and there is so much to look at the kids have fun even if we don't spend money.

Posted this on Facebook while we were there to trick hubby into thinking we bought him a quad for Christmas... he didn't fall for it :)

Today was "Small Business Saturday" and my local yarn store was having a sale.  I went to check it out since I needed some more alpaca and NEED sale prices on that!
The little shop was packed!  Usually there's 2 people in there knitting and that's about it.  Good for them and I hope they really bring in some money this weekend.  I can't imagine not having a store that offers quality fiber around...

Below, the kids were mesmerized by the ball winder while I shopped.  Personally, I think they like having the other women fawn over them and tell them how good they are and offer them candy from their basket on the counter!

This is where you can always find me... natural, undyed Alpaca... In case of the apocalypse or squirrel attack, I will probably be found hiding next to this bin doing my survivalist thing...

I have so many things to do now it is almost overwhelming, but it's all in preparation for hubby's homecoming and Christmas vacation, so I wouldn't have it any other way.  All in all, what a great Thanksgiving with friends and my kids, wrapped up by my parents giving us an early Christmas gift that enables me to get my new tires on this week- my parents are the best!  Of course I'm secondary I think to the boys... they had to make sure their grandkids were coming!  If someone would have told me when I was younger how giddy new tires for the car would make me I would have thought it ridiculous, but here I am doing my happy dance!  My head is filled with housecleaning, knitted gifts, tires, haircuts, cleaning the car, cleaning the dogs, fall gardening, dr appts, new prescription for eyeglasses... it goes on and on and I hope I don't forget to pick hubby up LOL!

Loved everyone's updates on their holiday this year, and thanks for sharing your days!

The days are flying by now and my head is spinning and I think I need to collapse now...

If you don't hear from me in 3 days... send the knitting EMS crew...

  1. It looks like you had a nice holiday...even though your hubby isn't home yet. He does look awfully thin, you will have to fatten him up a bit when he gets home.

Boy, that looks like a very nice yarn shop. Makes me feel like crocheting!

  2. Hahaha, new tires are expensive! I would be doing the happy dance too! I wrote about how I was happy over this! http://nycgardening.blogspot.com/2010/11/black-friday-deals-part-2.html
A decade ago, I would have thought I was crazy!

  3. I think your cake looks marvelous darling! And I love that you shoved and pushed! HA! LOL!

20 lbs! I bet you can put that back on him in no time! That's alot of weight to drop.

The boys sitting on the floor is such a sweet picture! They look so cute!

Now you just gave me one more thing to do though! Note to self: Prepare for squirrel attack.

  4. Gimme a piece of that cake! I need a shot of sugar right now. So glad it was a hit at Thanksgiving. Nothing worse than a home baked goodie nobody wants to eat!

I'll bet your two boys are the best behaved ones that have ever been in the yarn shop. And yay for yarn sales for Mom! A knitter can just never have too much yarn. Ever. Never.

Good golly, don't they serve anything nutritious on your hubby's ship? You can tell he's so ready to be home. I'll bet he's dreaming of what he's gonna eat when he gets home to your good cooking.

We're in the midst for shopping for new tires for the Suburban. We reeeeally need them right away considering the early snow/ice conditions we're getting. Bless your mom and dad for their early tire present!

Try to take it easy these last few weeks before Christmas and hubby coming home. We don't want you getting sick!

  5. Hurrah for your parents coming through. We only had to spring for one tire last week and that was painful enough (especially since someone evidently knifed the tire while we were grocery shopping- really, what is wrong with people!) I'm so NOT prepared for the holidays. But, hey, I've still got a month.....

  6. My cousins own and opperate an alpaca ranch in Mora, New Mexico (Victory Ranch - the largest alpaca ranch in the South West) http://www.victoryranch.com

They're having an on-line sale now on their wool.

    It's great stuff!!

  7. That's a housefull of little boys! The cranberry cake looks delicious.
I'm sure your hubby will enjoy your cooking and all the love he'll get from his boys and you when he gets home.
New tires sounds like the best gift to me too. What better gift than the one of safety?

  8. Good Times! Glad you and the boys had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I think I'll head over to the store later to make myself some cranberry cake. :)Looks yummy!

  9. Oh man, a Bass Pro close to your house... Every time we go visit family in OK we drive by one and really want to stop. It never works out though, on the way there they are already closed and on the way home they're not open yet. One day...
Your yarn store looks great! I love places like that, could hang out there all day long.
Glad you had a nice Thanksgiving and got the early Christmas present from your parents.

  10. Robin, it is a nice shop, we are lucky to have it here!

meemsnyc, saw your Black Friday finds, good job! It is amusing that things like washing machines, vacuums, sewing machines & tires are what we dream of now that we're "all grown up"!

APG, he always comes home like that - lots more muscle from working out but still pretty skinny! We are definitely all about squirrel attack here, if we refer to WTSHTF people get scared of us so the alternative is a little kinder sounding LOL

Mama Pea, nope absolutely nothing nutritious about the ship! The chicken is funny colored and is even marked for military use, lacking any type of "grading" or marking indicating it's freshness, pretty much slated for dog food LOL. Brown soggy lettuce is common, I've heard stories of cockroaches and other random bugs appearing on platters... nice, huh? A lot of people eat Ramen noodles and the like that they buy at the ship store! I'm afraid his Christmas Dinner manners will be severely lacking this year since he's been away from decent food for so long!

Judy, that's just crazy! I can see it happening here too though, don't know what is wrong with some people.

Ribbit..... ooooooh..... I'll definitely be checking out that link!

Sparkless, new tires are the BEST!

Dani, that cake is SO GOOD! And I'll go ahead and admit that it's the first time I've eaten cranberries LOL! (Although I LOVE cranberry juice!)

Anke, Bass Pro is okay, Gander Mtn. is about the same, but to me CABELA's is the best!

@everyone: my kids are making up for that good behavior at the yarn shop today..... I'm pulling my hair out!!!
