got earplugs?

Two guesses on which kid is learning to play fiddle!

In today's harvest: The "Orange Wellingtons" have arrived!
I have been anxiously awaiting these tomatoes, they are very pretty, and my first non-red/black tomatoes I have grown. They are much more orange than they look on my camera!

I have been running non stop since yesterday morning trying to be as productive as possible during our cool weather. It seems that all our appointments, bill paying, swimming lessons, shopping, errands have all been begging for attention and I capped it off with our monthly grocery trip, ugh! This morning after spending 2 hours in the commissary on base (on military payday at that!) fighting the crowds, I finally made it to the freezer section which I am usually able to bypass pretty quickly - my usual is to cruise by one door, fling some Boca burgers (my kids love 'em!) into the cart and boogie to the checkouts - but nooooooo! Kids start begging for this:

Don't know where/whom they heard about these from (tv?), but begged and begged until I finally said, "whatever" and put 2 in the cart. I was looking over my shoulder all embarrassed until I saw a lady with 4 overweight kids with a stack of them in her cart. I figured I could fly under the radar with her next to me, so I hid them under some other stuff and trucked on. I can't believe I did this, but my kids never eat junk, not lunchables, corn dogs, pizza rolls, none of that - so I relaxed this one day since I knew I was not going to have time for cooking anyways tonight.

The best part was watching them as they prepared to eat it. They went from jumping up and down excited while is was spinning 'round in the microwave, to just plain being dumbfounded when it was done. Check out the faces!

Fledgling Fiddler Lochlann says "Mom, it looks like the plastic food we had in our play kitchen"! I believe he's right...

I got LOTS of stuff done today! Loving the weather - will be working hopefully outside all day tomorrow. Should have some pics of what's going on once I clear away the weeds.

Maybe Loch should practice his fiddle outside, maybe that will work on those Japanese Beetles, nothing else seems to scare them off!

  1. How cool is it that Loch wants to learn to play the fiddle! Tell him to practice a lot so we can look forward to a video of a first tune.

Sometimes it doesn't hurt to expose kids to what passes as "food" out there in the world. With the nutritious, fresh, home-cooked foods they've always had, they can't help but notice that the other stuff just doesn't taste quite right.

  2. It's funny (the good king) that your kids won't eat junk. When we were in MN last weekend, out hotel was right next to a McD's. Since it was late and storming when we arrived, we asked the boys if they wanted to eat there. Karl said he'd rather eat used kitty litter. Now, I may not go that far but I'm glad they opted for another nearby restaurant with more 'real' food.

  3. Let me tell you how right you were about filming and eating strange foods! I got both the boy and the girl to eat a cherry tomato by filming them.

    Thank goodness for digital recorders!

  4. I suffered through a cello and a trumpet (boys). The music teacher said my cello player was brilliant, but he never learned anything besides Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, so brilliant isn't the word I would use. Then my youngest (girl) was asked to sit in for the drummer in their 6th. grade school band. She'd never played drums before, but was a natural. She ended up being their drummer! At least she practiced on pads, so it wasn't noisy or off key.

    Dang, those tomatoes look good!

  5. My daughter started with the violin at a young age. Music turned out to be her gift. A few years later we found out that she could sing...and boy she could sing! She had a one in a billion voice!

  6. I am really excited for him to find something he likes to play. Sadly, music is not big in our school system here. Growing up, we were REQUIRED to have had music! I played bass clarinet so unfortunately I won't be able to help him with a stringed instrument! Music was really important in my family and I think it is a must to learn an instrument - I have never heard of anyone regretting learning to play, have you?!

As for the kids, I wish they were above junk, but they do love McDonalds, etc, we try to go only once a month though. They are kids, and I think that whole idea and marketing appeals to them - but I am thankful that even while eating it, they do realize that it is not nutritionally valuable and understand that it is a junky treat, and not a "real meal". That's all I can ask for at this point!

  8. Hee, hee. I love Loch's comment about the resultant Kid Cuisine! When I saw the commercials for it, I think I growled - waaay too many carbs and empty calories. Seems like the packaging is more appealing than the "food."

Okay, mom, continue to be encouraging on the fiddle as it takes time to learn, but worth it. I started violin lessons in the 4th grade (back when schools still had music programs) - all of us were squeeky. I was embarrassed by the terrible sound, but learned I could put a clothespin on the bridge to mute the sound a bit. This helped to hear the correct notes without being quite so loud and annoying. Good thing he didn't ask to play the drums. :>)

Have a great long, weekend. Cheers ~

  9. Your kids are great observers! It DOES look like plastic food. Hope the fiddling goes well!

  10. HAHAHA...some things just look and taste better on tv.

  11. Yeah, my kids complain about stuff but their palates are fairly educated. Plastic food doesn't cut it really.
