Well, it's about TIME!

My first decent harvest of heirloom tomatoes! Of course it happens now, when I have no interest in being outside due to the heat indexes in the 100's and high humidity. Couple that with the fact that hubby is gone and I now have lawn mowing to contend with as well. Go figure! Looks like canning season has arrived:

This Brandywine weighed in at over 1 lb!

That's all for today, I just finished mowing the lawn and am covered in grass, dirt, sweat, and mosquito bites. Time to hit the shower, put kiddos to bed, and veg out for a few hours. Looks to be about 30 eggplant to deal with tomorrow, they will have to go to the farmer's market since I am tired of them and they are pretty much impossible to preserve! Good night all.

  1. WOW!!! Have we ever seen an overview of the garden itself? I've got stupid brain and I can't remember.

  2. My Mom makes a sauce of eggplant, tomato, onion and peppers that she then freezes. It's really good over pasta with parmesan cheese. I don't think she has a recipe since it's different every time. It depends on what she has at the moment.
I finally got a few tomatoes today. And so it begins...

  3. That is a whole heck of a lot of tomatoes and eggplant! I wonder if there's anyone in your area on VeggieTrader.

Does your farmers' market buy extra produce from local homegrowers? That's cool!

  4. Congrats on your gorgeous heirloom tomatoes! Wow. Makes me remember the wonderfully tasty (and misshapen) ones my grandpa used to grow back in Illinois.

Do you know how much I love eggplant? Do you know we can't grow eggplant up here without a greenhouse? Can I come live with you for a few days and eat nothing but eggplant?

  5. i too have tomato envy, I have to go to the farm stand to get finds like that! I do not have lawn envy, I have a neighbor and a tractor that mows mine when flyboy is away.

  6. Ribbit, June 25 post had some garden pics...although it's looking a bit more overgrown now :)! And no, the farmers' market doesn't buy homegrown produce anymore, but for $10 I can park in the circular commons area and sell out of the back of my car! I really wanted to do this today but it's 100 degrees and I have my kids ALL THE TIME, lol! Mama Pea, I so wish I could give you some eggplant...looks like about the time I become settled in my Zone 7b/8 Master Gardener knowlege, it will be time to head back to MN to live and get slapped with a new zone again, lol! Actually learning the zonal differences is fun and keeps things from getting boring!

  7. How many eggplants did you plant?

That heat and hummidity sounds awful! Hope you were able to cool off and enjoy a home brew. 8)

Can bubba ganoush (sp?) be frozen? If so that could be a good use for eggplant if the kids would eat it.

  8. Kelly, I planted 4 Purple Rain Plants, and I only have 1 Thai Yellow, and that one is covered in little fruit, but not harvestable yet. I love making baba ganoush for dinner parties! We even had a "Greek Christmas" dinner last year that featured it. (My husband brings back all kinds of ideas and spices for me when he goes there). I have a feeling that it would turn dark in the freezer, but it is worth researching since I can only imagine it would taste much better than old store bought eggplant at Christmas. Where DOES that stuff come from, lol???
